Conference Objectives
Liberty & Independence For Everyone

The LIFE Conference is an annual information exchange developed by key Delaware consumer-focused organizations that serve persons with disabilities and their families.  Continuing the successful tradition of the past decade, LIFE Conference XII is designed to equip participants.


TRACK: Legislation

OBJECTIVE: to educate conference attendees on the following: 1) available supports and accommodations promoting voting by Delawareans with disabilities; 2) “hot topic” State legislative initiatives in a variety of contexts (e.g. education; health; insurance; patient rights; disability prevention; community living); and 3) State programs which allow persons with disabilities to leave institutions with support; “buy in” to Medicaid despite moderate wages; and qualify for a broad array of Medicaid waiver services (e.g. respite; personal care; assisted living; emergency response  devices; vocational programs; adult day and habilitation services; and case management).

 

TRACK:  Independence through Assistive Technology                    

OBJECTIVE:  To promote and describe methods to further system change in three areas 1) a broad-based look at how initiatives can be complementary in assisting the aging population AND support for people with developmental disabilities and the benefits for states that employ this approach 2) legislation at the national level that will promote more construction of homes using the basics of Universal Design and 3) the ability to improve quality of life for persons with hearing impairments by providing and demonstrating both high tech and low tech hearing related assistive technology.

 

TRACK:  Family

OBJECTIVE:  To highlight the importance of addressing caregiver training for preventive oral care in individuals with developmental disabilities, finding supports and partnerships for families caring for individuals with developmental disabilities and educating attendees on the victimization of people with disabilities and where to find available services and support.

 

TRACK:  Education

Objective:  To further knowledge and action in educators, families, caregivers, and service providers in creating good plans for postsecondary education environments for youth with disabilities, understanding the new IEP for grades K-7 and transition, and recognizing the risks associated with the use of seclusion and restraint.
